How can we increase our student learning and motivation in math and science utilizing a collaborative approach?
Collaborative approach is between: students-students, teachers-teachers and teachers-students
Objectives from ISTE NETS-T that we will aspire to:
1. To facilitate and inspire learning and creativity
2. To design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments
3. To model digital-age work and learning
4. To promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
5. To engage in professional growth and leadership
Our Goal: to develop instructional opportunities for students that encourage, and are dependent upon, the use of a student learning community for the sharing of information, data, questions and excitement!
Proposal:
1. Identify the content to be the foundation for the instruction.
2. Design the platform that will be used by students and teachers
3. Survey teachers at the beginning and end as to their familiarity and comfort with online projects.
4. Pre-Post assessment of student's understanding of the learning targets.
5. Identify the instructional strategies that will meet a vertical articulation toward the learning targets. Include options for Kindergarten through Grade 5.
6. Provide opportunities for teachers and students to collaboratively communicate using Web 2.0 technologies.
7. Data to be collected:
Pre-assessment of students (surveymonkey)
Survey for teachers (surveymonkey) (pre)
Number of students posting on the platform
Number of weblinks provided by students and teachers to assist with the project
Post-assessment of students
Survey for teachers (post)
8. How will data be analyzed?
Did student learning improve?
Were students engaged in the activity (how to measure?)
How many collaborative technologies were utilized by each teacher/student?
How many teachers are willing to participate? How many would do it again? How many would be interested in participating the next time?
9. Have students continue the learning by designing a related inquiry/extension.
Action Steps:
Research to see what others have done. (we have the background in lesson study - taking it to the 21st century - using the collaborative process)
Future thinking: Start with a project this year; add additional projects next year (maybe 2 per year) that would grow the number of students/teachers involved. Then perhaps we would open it up to other districts. Link to high school students to answer the kids' questions.
